Amman, Owen eye recounts following narrow losses at polls

Two races, 25 votes.
That’s the only separation in the Tuesday’s primary election Atlas Township Supervisor race between incumbent Paul Amman’s bid for a third term and newcomer Shirley Kautman-Jones. The tally ended early Wednesday morning in Atlas Township with Kautman-Jones receiving 649 votes to Amman’s 624 votes.
Similarly, the race for Brandon Township Treasurer was just as close, with challenger Tyrone Beltrano receiving 1,037 votes, edging out four-term incumbent Linda Owen getting 1,012 votes.
Even with the narrow victory, Amman’s not sure if he’ll challenge the vote.
‘I’ve never been into sour grapes, I’m not sure what I’ll do as far as a recount goes,? said Amman. ‘Some you win, some you lose.?
Owen’s certain a recount is forthcoming.
‘I’m considering a recount,? said Owen. ‘But after the Board of Canvassers complete their review and if it does not look as if anything is out of place, I’ll take it as a retirement.?
Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson said that following an election, the Oakland County Board of Canvassers will review the votes for all of the county’s 51 municipalities and 542 precincts.
‘After the Board of Canvassers are done, then we’ll do a recount if a recount is requested,? said Johnson. ‘The vote will be certified in about two weeks. It’s very time-consuming, but a great tool for those that want to be sure. Most of time a lot does not change, however, there’s flukes.?
The cost is $10 per precinct and paid for by the candidate.
