Lady Blackhawks take aim at season

Brandon Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Bryan Ray will begin his 11th year at the helm of the Lady Blackhawks team, who will try to improve on a 7-9 Flint Metro League record (8-11 overall) during the 2007-08 season. The 13-member team, who lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Grand Blanc, will return six players from last year, now seniors.
‘Last year, nine of our losses were by six points or less’and plenty of one point games, too,? said Ray. ‘That means it’s a matter of conditioning.?
Up until last year, girls basketball was played in the fall sports season while the boys played basketball in the winter. But that all changed after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled the schedule discriminated against the girls.
The change spells more conditioning for the Blackhawks, said Ray.
‘That gives us a little edge and will shore up those close games. Some of the girls even practice with the cross country team,? he said.
Key for the Blackhawks this season will be Danielle Kwasiborski, a three-year starter who was injured toward the end of the 2008 season.
‘She can lead this team. Great at all five positions, she can do it all. I’m looking for Danielle to step up big this year.?
Also solid this year will be Maggie Stewart and Christina Luczak.
‘This is going to be our breakout year, we have a strong base to play on this season.?
The team opens this year at home against the Goodrich Martians on Dec. 5.
