Meeting the needs

Last Christmas, the Ortonville Community Emergency Fund helped 140 families in need, says Judy Henley, OCEF food pantry coordinator. This year, she expects the number to be even greater.
Five years ago, less than 100 families requested help from OCEF, a non-profit organization comprised of area churches which help families within the Brandon School District. But Henley says that number is on the rise as she is now getting calls from families who have never needed help before, asking for OCEF’s assistance.
‘These are people who never would have thought they would need help,? Henley said. ‘It can happen to any of us at any time… It could be your kids, grandkids, any family or friends.?
Henley cites the economy and unemployment as reasons for the increase and said many people, even if they are working, are underemployed or have no medical insurance, which she said can cause a tailspin.
Area businesses and organizations are currently accepting toy and food donations for OCEF and cash donations for OCEF will be accepted at St. Anne Catholic Church. Gift cards for groceries or gasoline are also appreciated as many people struggle with the high cost of gas and getting to work.
‘Please help. Think of how you would like to be treated if you were to find yourself in the postion of needing help,? Henley said. ‘It’s nice to know there’s a safety net in your own community.?
The following is a list of drop-off sites. The deadline for toy donations is Dec. 17. All other donations must be to St. Anne Catholic Church by noon on Dec. 19. To volunteer, call Karyn Milligan at (248) 634-4692. For assistance, call Judy Henley at (248) 627-3965.
