Township man faces felonious assault with a baton

Ortonville-An angry uncle is facing a felonious assault charge after he hit his niece’s boyfriend in the head with a baton.

Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputies from the Brandon Township substation responded at 11:06 a.m., Sept. 22 to the parking lot of an apartment building on Myron Street for a report of a fight involving multiple individuals with weapons involved. Upon arrival, a deputy observed a large group of males and females yelling at each other. A woman was holding a long metal plant hanger pole in her hands and was waving it toward a man and woman. All parties were yelling loudly. Blood was observed on skin and clothing of four subjects.

One of the women identified herself as the mother of an 18-year-old at the scene. She said her daughter had called her two days ago to complain of her boyfriend beating and choking her. The woman said she sent her brother at that time to pick up her daughter with the assistance of OCSO deputies and her daughter denied the assaults, but left with her uncle. The mother said she learned last night her daughter had returned here to the boyfriend’s residence and because she was concerned for her safety, she and her brother returned to get her daughter.

When they arrived, she was talking to her daughter and noticed her brother and daughter’s boyfriend in a physical fight at the top of the metal steps which lead to the apartment hallway. She said she didn’t know who started the fight and two women from the apartment, later found to be the boyfriend’s mother and sister, who was nude, came out and started fighting with her brother as well. She said all four began falling down the steps and the fight continued in the parking lot until deputies arrived.

The daughter told police her mother and uncle arrived to get her and she told her mother she did not want to leave. She also did not know who started the fight, but yelled for help, at which time her boyfriend’s mother and sister came out to help.

The sister said she was just getting out of the shower when she heard screaming for help, so she ran outside without any clothes on and saw the uncle striking her brother with a black in color club to the back of the head.

She said she also observed the uncle punch her mother to the face. The sister said she grabbed the plant hanger pole and began swinging it toward him. She put clothes on prior to police arrival.

The boyfriend said his girlfriend’s uncle struck him in the back of the head several times with the black metal pipe.

The uncle said his sister asked him to come with her to get her daughter. At the apartment, he said he was involved in a physical fight with the boyfriend, but then he was attacked by two women from the apartment. he denied having a metal bar or weapon. When the deputies found the baton in the back of the mother’s car, he stated he “brought the baton for personal protection.”

The Brandon Fire Department transported the boyfriend to the hospital.

The uncle was arrested, transported to the Oakland County Jail and arraigned on one count of felonious assault. Personal bond was set at $25,000.
