Village Skate Park sign-ups lag

Ortonville– Last call.

The village has the extended sign-up deadline for the Village Skate Park to June 2.

“If we do not get participation, it will close,” said John Lyons, retiring village manager.

The park has yet to open this year. As of May 23, only eight registrations had been received and at the village council’s Monday night meeting, Lyons told the council it was “not advisable” to open the park without receiving more sign-ups.

“I’m in favor of the park, but we need participation or it is in jeopardy,” said Lyons, who said the park serves a need for children who are not in mainstream sports such as baseball or soccer. “If we lose the park it will be detrimental to those kids.”

The park, located at the corner of Cedar and Ball streets in the village, was originally scheduled to open May 3. The park was only open for half the season last year and was closed all of the 2014 season due to lack of participation.

A registration fee of $20 per skater/biker is required to get a pass for the season. It is $10 for each additional skater/biker in the same family, and a $40 cap for a family of three or more. A $2 day pass is also available. Register at the village office 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fees are used to fund a skate park monitor. Without the monitor, the park will not open.
