Busy student honored

If there was an activity this year at Harvey-Swanson Elementary School, chances are Hailey Phelps was involved in some manner.
Phelps, a fourth-grader from Ortonville, was recognized by the staff at Harvey-Swanson for her hard work at the school with the ‘Principal’s Award,? which was given at the school’s awards assembly on the last day of school in June.
The award is presented to a fourth-grader each year at the school for contributions to life at Harvey-Swanson. Phelps, the daughter of Lori and Joe Phelps of Ortonville, will be entering the fifth grade at Brandon Fletcher Intermediate School next year.
‘I’m very proud of her accomplishments,? Lori Phelps said of her daughter. ‘She’s a great kid and kind to others.?
Lori Phelps added that Hailey’s many school activities include working on the school’s safety patrol, doing morning announcements on the school’s radio station, WHSE, serving on the school’s Student Council, and participated in the school’s Reading Counts program.
Phelps has also attended a writing workshop at the University of Michigan-Flint and a technology conference in Lansing, and earned a Great Lakes Scholarship. She is also a peer mediator at Harvey-Swanson and is an avid soccer and softball player.
Her writing may soon be seen nationally. Lori Phelps said her daughter has applied to be a Time for Kids reporter. If she is accepted, she will be asked to submit articles for that magazine.
