Some local residents volunteered July 14 to be thrown in jail for a good cause: The Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA holds one Lock Up a year in Lake Orion, to raise money to directly benefit Orion/Oxford families affected by Muscular Dystrophy. This year’s event was held at Castello di Bologna, and owner Joe Bologna donated food and service for the event. Castello was also the setting for an MDA fundraiser in January, Ice Paradise. Participants in this year’s Lock Up were transported to and from the event via limousine. MDA district director Steve Nacarato said about $20,000 was raised by the event last year, and the money goes towards purchasing wheelchairs, leg braces, medical assistance, counseling, physical therapy and funds grants for Michigan State University, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. Nacarato said one minute of Muscular Dystrophy research costs $63. Pictured here is Lake Orion High School Principal Todd Dunckley doing his time for the MDA.
