Four years and running

For the fourth year in a row the Clarkston varsity girls won the Oakland County cross country meet. The boys varsity runners finished 16th out of 34 teams in their area of the County meet which was held on Oct. 9.
?(The County meet) was the best I have ever seen the team run,? said girls Coach Jamie Labrosse.
Clarkston’s Jenny Morgan finished first overall posting a time of 18:50. Liz Mengyan nipped at her teammate’s heels throughout the race and ended up in second place with a time of 19:03. The girls were far and away the best team in the race, they scored 33 points which put them 93 points ahead of second place Milford.
‘At this time of the year we are just trying to polish (the girls) up, it’s a little like doing a tune up on a car,? said Labrosse.
Aside from Morgan and Mengyan Clarkston saw a tremendous overall team effort at the Oakland County meet. Gillian Nordquist finished eighth overall, Anne Oltman placed 10th, Jenna Leach ended up in 12th place and Lyndsay Smith crossed the finish line 13th.
Currently the Wolves are ranked third nationally and number one in the Midwest region. Labrosse feels with the win this week, his team should move up to the number two spot nationally.
The boys program was not a favorite to win the County meet, but their Coach Mike Nichols felt the team did not run particularly well on Saturday.
‘I thought we belonged in the top ten,? said Nichols.
The boys have shown improvement as the season has worn on, but still stand at 0-5 in dual meets.
Hazen Brennan ran a 17:23 to pace the Wolves. No other boys runner finished in under 18 minutes.
?(We lose) because of inconsistency, I wonder what team will show up each week,? said Nichols.
The boys hope to have a strong showing at the league meet on Oct. 21. The girls will be heavily favored to win the league meet as well as regionals on Oct. 30 and the state finals on Nov. 6.
