Brandon swim quartet first in team history to qualify for states

Brandon’s varsity boys swimming team arrived ahead of schedule in its quest to send competitors to the state boys swimming finals.
The Blackhawks qualified for states in two different events at the River Rat Invitational Saturday, Mar. 4 at Ann Arbor Huron. The 200 yard medley relay team of Tyler Walls, Brad MacIntyre, Josh Collier and Tyson DeLandsheer finished in 1:47.6, while DeLandsheer clocked in at 1:05.12 in the 100 yard breaststroke.
The Brandon contingent will test their skills against other Division 2 swimmers in the state meet Mar. 10-11 at Eastern Michigan University. Preliminary events will take place Mar. 10, with the finals scheduled for Mar. 11.
‘I had no idea we’d have a state qualifier so soon,? Brandon coach Todd Duncan said. ‘In swimming, there’s no districts or regionals ? there’s a state qualifying time at the beginning of the year. My goal was to have a state qualifier in the first four years of the program.?
Duncan said the Brandon swimmers will be in for an eye-opening experience at states.
‘It’s a pretty big deal for these guys,? he said. ‘The state meet is unlike any other meet they’ve been in. It’s very competitive, very fast. I think it will do wonders for our program.?
