Blackhawks head into spring break with sweep of Kearsley

Brandon’s bats got untracked last week and earned them a pair of victories.
The Blackhawks took advantage of the big inning to win both ends of an April 6 doubleheader against visiting Kearsley. Brandon won the opener 7-4 and the nightcap 8-2.
Brandon’s record is now 2-1-1 heading into spring break. The Blackhawks do not resume action until April 27, when they open their Flint Metro League season with a doubleheader against Lapeer East.
Coach Ron Wagner said he will try and schedule a game for the Blackhawks the week they come back from break. In the meantime, they don’t have any scrimmages planned during the break.
‘We’re coming back Wednesday (April 19) and practicing over spring break,? he said.
In the opener, the Blackhawks spotted the Hornets a 2-1 lead before scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Kearsley scored two runs in the top of the sixth to trim the Brandon lead to 5-4, but Brandon scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Andrew Spry keyed the Brandon attack by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Curtis Byers and Ray Reynolds each added two hits.
The Blackhawks didn’t wait nearly as long to get going in the second game, scoring six runs in the first inning. Brandon sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
Hyde, Matt Cinader, Kenny McNeil and Robert Thompson each had two hits for the Blackhawks, while Andrew Harding scored two runs and had two RBI and two stolen bases.
The Blackhawks had their hands full with Flint Powers in an April 5 doubleheader, losing the first game 11-1. Brandon tied Powers at seven in the second game, which was called after seven innings due to darkness.
The Chargers scored three runs each in the first and sixth innings of the opener to key the victory, although the Blackhawks hurt their own cause with six errors in the game. The Blackhawks only had three runs in the first game.
Brandon had a better showing in the nightcap, scoring two runs each in the third and fourth innings. Reynolds and Feltner led the way with two hits each.
