Kayga, Andre? bright spots at Flint Metro League meet

Brandon’s girls track season came to a close with the Flint Metro League meet.
The Blackhawks finished sixth at the meet, held May 21 at Lapeer East, earning a total of 50 points. Brandon ended their league season with a league dual meet record of 2-4, good for fifth place in the league.
Brandon’s best showing in the meet came in the long jump, where Kylie Kayga finished first (15?2-1/2?) and teammate Patrice Andre? took second (15?2-1/4). Both competitors made the all-league team.
The Blackhawks also placed a couple of team members on the all-league team in the shot put, as Melissa McCarty finished second (31?4-3/4?) and Sarah Bond third (30?7-1/2?). Bond also placed fourth in the discus (85?6?), while Danie Ashford finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (52.57).
This season, the youth-laden Blackhawks gained a lot of on-the-job experience, which figures to help them in the future.
Out of 30 team members this season, only five were seniors. Coach Greg Hyde said the freshmen and sophomores showed a great deal of promise this season.
Brandon’s freshmen took eighth place in the Oakland County freshmen meet May 24, and their freshmen and sophomores took third place at the Fenton 9th-10th Grade Invitational May 10.
‘We were very young and inexperienced, but the kids did a nice job,? he said. ‘We should have a much stronger team next year.?
