Township will discuss tree ordinance

North Ridge, a new subdivision off Waldon between Sashabaw and Pine Knob roads, has been cleared of trees, and some are questioning what can be done to protect remaining trees in the community.
Independence Township resident Keith Kolich said he was shocked when he drove down Waldon and saw the construction.
‘I was saddened to see a huge tract of woods totally decimated, clear cut of hundreds of trees,? he said. ‘What happens to the wood lands ordinance we have or should have that prevents this horrible kind of destruction??
Clearing trees for North Ridge follows outcry over a lot in downtown Clarkston, at Walton and Main, cleared of its trees.
In Independence Township, Treasurer Paul Brown said he will bring a tree and woodlands ordinance to the board on Nov. 10. Brown said it is time to address protecting trees and woodlands in the area, and have rules in place to protect natural resources.
