A wicked stepmother, jealous stepsisters and their enslaved Cinderella in rags with no chance of attending the royal ball.
Enter a fairy godmother with a magic spell that transforms Cinderella with a dress, a golden coach to ride in and amazing glass slippers. Then a chance meeting with a handsome Prince Charming at a royal ball. All’s going well for Cinderella but there’s a catch. The magic spell that provided a dream come true evening wears off at midnight. Cinderella’s furious stepmother and sisters are not happy with the way the evening went her.
Experience the classic story April 26-28 at Brandon High Schools production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
“When we were trying to think of shows, we wanted to something fantastical, and also something people knew,” said co-director Jeff Malicke. “There’s a lot of comedy, it’s very funny. They’ve taken a classic and added some warm humor and tried to modernize it a bit.”
The production involves around 65 students, including stage crew and pit crew, and around 30 in the cast.
“There’s a lot of dancing,” said Malicke. “A ballroom scene, a banquet scene. I’m always just in awe at how wonderful the students sing. Some of them sing and I just get chills.”
Co-director Brittany Miller is also excited for the singing and dancing in the show.
“There is a song called ‘The Prince is Giving a Ball’, and there are so many parts that happen at once, and when it all works well it’s the greatest thing you’ve ever seen,” said Miller. “This is the nicest group of kids I have ever worked with.”
Both Miller and Malicke are looking forward to showing the production to the community.
“I’m most excited for the community to come out here and see a fresh interpretation on a story they’re probably familiar with,” said Malicke. “I’m excited for it to be something the district and community can be proud of.”
