Atlas Twp. – A new full-time office manager and bookkeeper is part of a checks-and-balance policy recently implemented by the Atlas Township Board.
Beth Forys, who has a background in accounting, will fill the position effective immediately, said Atlas Township Supervisor Paul Amman.
Auditors Yeo & Yeo of Flint recommended an improved check-signing policy in their annual spring report to the township.
It’s been an ongoing auditing recommendation, said Atlas Township clerk Tere Onica.
‘With 15-digit-long numbers, there’s room for error,? she said. ‘When you catch it earlier it’s easier to correct.?
Under the revised policy, Forys will write and post checks, while the clerk and treasurer will sign checks in most cases.
Previously, Atlas Township lacked enough office staff to ‘spread responsibility around,? said Onica. ‘We need somebody overlooking the whole process to minimize errors and make corrections.?
