Martian Girls Golf sixth at states, Walter named Coach of the Year

East Lansing — The Goodrich Girls Varsity Golf Team capped off an awesome season with sixth place finish at the 2022 Michigan High School Athletic Association Lower Peninsula Division 3 Girls Golf Finals at Forest Akers, East Lansing. There were 18 teams competing Oct. 15-16.
After winning the Genesee County and Metro League Conference tournaments The Lady Martians turned their focus toward the State Tournament, said Lloyd Walter in his fifth year as head coach.
“Our goal was to make it out of a tough Regional as a top three team which we accomplished,” said Walter. “Our team felt like we had a good chance of making the top five at States, a position we sat in after the first day of competition.”
Abby Schell and Sanora Kochan were honored as MHSAA All State Honorable Mention.
The season was capped off with Coach Walter named Flint Metro League Coach of the Year.
“People congratulate me for the award but really I’m only as good as the strong support I receive,” said Walter, who directed Flint Junior Golf for 15 years and coached varsity for four years and junior varsity three at Kearsley High School before coming to Goodrich.
“The parents, administration, community and girls that work hard each day during the season really make this program happen.”
During Walter’s five years as coach his teams won three Flint Metro League titles and a Genesee Area Conference crown.
