Brandon Twp.- On Feb. 4, the township board of trustees approved the first reading for a new harassment ordinance 6-0. The ordinance addresses harassment via texting and social media, which was not addressed in the previous ordinance.
“We currently have a harassment ordinance, but it does not cover texting, anything that deals with social media,” said Lt. Greg Glover, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Brandon substation commander. “It will keep us from having to go through warrant packages, going through the prosecutor’s office, tying them up for things they don’t need to be doing.”
The ordinance, which will be located in the Code of Ordinances, Chapter 28, Article III, section 28-52, addresses both stalking and harassment via electronic communications.
“When we know we have a case, we can write that ticket as an appearance ticket and hand deliver it to them without having to go through the prosecutor’s office,” said Glover. “It allows us other avenues and covers a lot more than just harassment.”
