Brandon cagers hang tough in Flint Metro League race

After a tough loss to Fenton Oct. 14, the Brandon girls basketball team bounced back and are still in the thick of the Flint Metro League race.
The Blackhawks routed host Holly 45-14 on Oct. 20, improving to 6-8 overall and 6-2 in the league. Holly fell to 1-13 overall.
Senior Jessica Jennings led Brandon with 11 points, while Savannah Stedman and Maria Schmidtke each added nine points for the Blackhawks.
Brandon, which led 21-12 at the half, pulled away from the Bronchos in the third quarter, outscoring Holly 13-0 in the period.
The win was crucial for the Blackhawks to stay in the league race following their 38-37 loss to Fenton five days earlier.
The Blackhawks started out slowly against the Tigers, scoring only three points in the first quarter as Fenton took a 10-3 lead at the end of the period. Brandon rallied in the second quarter and closed the gap to 18-16 by halftime.
However, the Tigers held on for the win, despite Stedman hitting a shot to bring the Blackhawks within one point with two seconds left. It was too little, too late, though, for the Blackhawks.
Stedman led the Blackhawks with 12 points, while Jennings and junior Brooke Schaefer added nine points each.
