Lady Martians tee up second at states

East Lansing-In their first full year as a varsity sport, the Goodrich Girls Golf team finished the 2015 season as runners-up to the state champions for Division 3 following competition Oct. 17 at Forest Akers West Golf Course at Michigan State University.
‘We started as a club sport halfway through the 2014 season,? said Jason Bescoe, head coach. ‘Then in our first year we went undefeated and won the Genesee Area Conference. This team just never quit and worked hard all summer’they just got substantially better. So when the season started the girls were on top of their game and made it all the way to states. They rallied at states and passed every team; however, Spring Lake won and we were state champ runners-up. A great addition to the team was freshman Elizabeth Gibbs’she really completed the team and we used her score both days of the state finals.?
Goodrich Girls golf scores at state were: Sydni Harding, 162 ? finished tied for fifth overall; Taylor Harding, 165 ? finished seventh overall; Elizabeth Gibbs, 201; Aaron Monroe, 207; Megan Reimel, 210.
Sydni Harding was league champion, shooting a 75. Sydni tied for second for a low round at regional with her sister, Taylor Harding with a score of 78. Taylor beat Sydni in a playoff.
First team all league were Taylor and Sydni Harding, second team all league were Aaron Monroe, Megan Reimel, Elizabeth Gibbs, and Bailey Bryant. The team qualified for state and was in fifth place after day one. The team trailed Spring Lake, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook, Detroit Country Day, and Warren Regina.
On Aug. 25, 2014 the Goodrich School Board OK’d the first girls golf team. Prior to that girls who wanted to golf had to do so on their own with no school affiliation or join the boys? team. Competing with the boys? team offered many unique and challenging obstacles, including having to hit from the longer tee box.
‘This was a great season,? added Bescoe. ‘When the season started my goal was just to see this team get better. But I soon realized this was just a very special group that was going to go far. They all stepped up and put Goodrich on the map.?
