A life on the farm’Maurine Scramlin remembered

From the fields of Groveland Township to the White House lawn to a farm house kitchen’Maurine Scramlin’s dedication to family and agriculture will be remembered by the community.
Scramlin died Aug. 16 at Fenton Extended Care.
She was 92.
Maurine H. Sutton was born to Will and Ruth Sutton in Pontiac on June 2, 1916. The family moved to Ortonville a few years later and she attended the Bird County Schoolhouse. She then attended Ortonville High School, where she graduated in 1933. Three years later, Maurine married her township neighbor, William Scramlin. The couple built a small home on one acre along Jossman Road in Groveland Township, part of the Scramlin family farm.
‘Mom and Dad raised five children on that farm,? said Marvin Scramlin, one of four sons.
‘Mom always had cinnamon rolls cooking in the kitchen and something on the stove to eat. I remember her out on a tractor wearing a dress’she always had one on, it seemed.?
In the 1940s, Maurine along with the Michigan Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, made a trek to Washington D.C. and camped out on the front lawn of the White House. During the stay, she met and spoke with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’an encounter remembered by Marvin.
‘Mom worked with the 4-H for many years,? said Marvin. ‘At times there were 50 area youth in her group to work with.?
Scramlin was a member of the Mt. Bethel UMC since 1933. She was also a member of the Ortonville Historical Society, the Ortonville Women’s Club and the Red Hat Society. She served on the State Executive Committee of the Michigan 4-H, was a past president of the Michigan Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, member of the Oakland County Farm Bureau Board, Oakland County 4-H Fair Board and a longtime leader of the Oakhill 4-H Club.
‘In my mother’s lifetime she witnessed the transitions from a one room schoolhouse to paved roads to computers,? said Marvin.
Survived by: daughter, Donna (Russell) Hubbard of Grayling; four sons, Richard ( Shirley) of Holly, Larry (Linda) of Lake Orion, Marvin (Terrie) of Holly and L.C. (Jackie) Scramlin of Holly; two brothers, Orra (Katherine) Sutton of Goodrich, and Ronald (the late Mary Lou) Sutton of Ortonville; two sisters-in-law, Edna (the late Robert) Sutton of Winterhaven, Fla. and Ethel (the late Ralph) Larson of Holly. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, and parents, Will and Ruth Sutton.
Funeral services were Wednesday at the Ortonville United Methodist Church, Ortonville, Rev. Patricia Harton officiated. Interment in the Ottawa Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to either the Mt. Bethel UMC or the Heartland Hospice, envelopes available at the funeral home.
