The Lake Orion High School varsity softball team defeated North Farmington on April 20 to begin a week’s unbeaten streak.
The Dragons won 18-1 to start the week, with Robin Roe the winning pitcher, tossing a two-hitter and striking out six. Kelsey Stout and Bristell Brumitt each had three hits for the Dragons, with Brumitt driving in seven runs. Nichole Woityra led the offensive attack with four hits.
On April 21, the team defeated Troy Athens in a doubleheader, 7-5, 7-3, improving their record to 5-0.
Roe was the winning pitcher in both games, and in the opener, Lauren LaPine had three hits and scored three runs. Eileen Frezza added two hits to the winning cause.
In the nightcap Stout and Woityra added three hits each. With the Dragons leading 4-3, in the top of the seventh, Brumitt smashed a three-run homerun over the center field fence to insure the Dragon victory. Coach Denny Davis stated ‘this was the best day Stout’s had in her three years as a varsity player. It was a timely effort, offensively, and she also made several outstanding defensive plays.?
On April 23, the Dragons had to go an extra inning to keep their unbeaten streak going. The team defeated Clarkston 9-8 in eight innings, as Roe won her fifth game of the year.
LaPine had four hits, and Woityra had three hits and scored five runs. The Wolves scored in the top of the eighth to take an 8-7 lead. Clarkston walked Woityra and with two outs, Lisa McDonald singled. Both players advanced on a pass ball, and Amber Agro hit a ball, allowing McDonald to score the winning run.
The Dragons are having an outstanding start with the team batting average at .384. Woityra is hitting .739 with five doubles, five triples and a homerun in 23 official times at bat.
‘This is the best start any player has had in the 27 years I have been coaching,? said Davis. ‘At the present time, Nichole is hitting nothing but line drives (ropes).?
LaPine is hitting .458 as the team’s lead-off hitter.
‘She is a left-handed slap hitter and the fastest player in the league,? Davis said. ‘With our outstanding speed and solid hitting attack, we will be very competitive. If we can improve our defense, we will go a long way toward having an outstanding season.?
