Elementary school is a time for kids for learn their ABCs, but once they’ve mastered those, it’s time to learn their CDVs.
CDV stands for ‘Core Democratic Values? ? the ideals upon which our democratic Republic was founded. They include Popular Sovereignty; the Common Good; Justice; Equality; Diversity, Truth; Patriotism; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Students in teacher Suzanne Rosevelt’s fourth-grade class at Clear Lake Elementary have been studying their CDVs like good little patriots.
As part of the unit, each student was assigned to choose what they believe is the most important CDV and create a poster depicting it.
Using a combination of words and colorful illustrations, students explained what the CDV they chose means and why it’s important to them and the nation.
The top three posters were given class awards and prominently displayed in the school hallway.
Alex Frattini won ‘Most Creative? for her poster about Patriotism. ‘I chose patriotism because I think that it’s not just about saying the Pledge (of Allegiance), it’s about helping people and caring about people. Like if somebody falls, someone should help them get up.?
Rex Underwood was awarded ‘Most Persuasive? for his poster featuring Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. He said this CDV is ‘very important because it’s about freedom.?
‘People want to have a good life in America, that’s why they live here,? Underwood added.
