A quarter may not seem like a lot of money, but to a family in need during the holiday season, it can mean a hot meal and presents under the Christmas tree.
Oxford Middle School students participated in ‘Quarter Wars? Dec. 1 -3 raising $536 to adopt a needy family this Christmas through Lighthouse of Oakland County.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes competed against each other to see which could collect the most quarters and earn the most points.
According to the fund-raiser’s organizer Megan McDonald, counselor at OMS, each grade earned one point for each quarter they collected. However, for each paper dollar collected, the class lost four points.
The idea is to collect as many quarters as possible for your own grade while contributing paper money to competing grades. Either way the needy family is the real winner.
The sixth-grade class won the quarter wars, according to McDonald.
Proceeds from the school’s Quarter Wars will be used to help a single mother with four children ages 15, 14, 11, and 5. The $536 will buy food for the family’s holiday meal and gifts for all the children, straight from their personal wish lists.
‘Our goal was to raise $500, so that each family member could have $100 spent on them,? McDonald said. ‘We’re trying to make their Christmas as awesome as possible.?
