Groveland Twp.- Postal workers are used to seeing what they call ‘mailbox baseball? during the summer or over school breaks, says Shelia Higgins, officer in charge of the Ortonville Post Office.
But over the Memorial Day weekend, vandals took it one step further.
Approximately five or six homes on Groveland, Thayer, Jossman, and Brandt roads had mail taken from their boxes, says Michigan State Police Trooper Bunting of the Groveland post.
Theft or intentional damage of mail is a federal crime, punishable by prison time and a large fine.
Children are suspected of the crimes, believed to have occured on the evening of May 27 or in the early morning of May 28. Mail was found all over the roads and it is not clear if all of it was recovered. The investigation is continuing.
‘Parents, be aware of what your children are doing,? says Higgins, who thanks customers who brought mail in. ?(Mail theft) is a federal offense and a very serious crime… There is a huge fine and parents can be held responsible for it.?
