This past December, Powerhouse Gym received one of the largest compliments possible from the Detroit News – the business was voted in an on-line poll Best in Michigan for 2002.
‘This shows our quality,? said owner Phill Stublensky. ‘They judge you by not just by size, but by customer service, cleanliness and programs.?
‘We’re also a ‘Showcase? Powerhouse Gym. There are 400 Powerhouse Gyms nation wide and we’re considered to be in the top 10-15.?
And the gym really shows that high level of quality. The machines, floors and walls are spotless. Community service volunteers in dress slacks, white shirts and ties roam the room with cleaning solution and rags making sure equipment is clean and the place doesn’t smell like sweat.
‘It’s not something we have to do, but something that our customers come to expect,? said Stublensky. The average customer at the Oxford/Orion Powerhouse is 36 years old, and exactly a 50/50 split between men and women, he added.
When Stublensky opened the gym four years ago, he knew one thing above all else – he wanted to make it special.
When folks walk in, they notice the gym is special. From it’s Greek murals on the walls and the large lounge areas to the staff who greet and work with the customers, Powerhouse Gym offers something unique. The workout center features 135 pieces of state of the art weight machines and 40 pieces of cardio equipment.
Stublensky said he also has four self-spotting stations, a free-weight room, stretching room, APEX workout room and specialty exercise room for sessions like kick boxing and yoga.
The folks at Powerhouse Gym can help customers meet all of their special needs by designing personalized workouts.
‘We have members who are vegetarian and some diabetic – we have one with a prosthetic leg from the knee down,? said Stublensky. ‘We have cardiac rehab members and have worked with girls with anorexia.?
Because of this personalized attention, Powerhouse Gym draws membership from about a 20 mile radius.
‘We’re not a wheel and deal gym,? added Stublensky. ‘We have our rates set just a little bit higher than the average to draw a certain clientele.?
A new program at the gym is the APEX Fitness System which incorporates five different components to help the client learn about and achieve weight loss.
‘Most other weight loss programs focus entirely on food intake, which is only one component of weight loss,? explained Stublensky. ‘This program addresses all five points.?
The five components of weight loss are food intake, cardiorespiratory training, food supplementation, resistance training and personal assistance.
Powerhouse Gym offers the an inclusive program. Stublensky’s trainers are certified nutrition specialists and certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
‘What we have is all encompassing,? he added. ‘We offer all of the services in one certified trainer, where you might otherwise have to pay for a nutritionist, a weight loss specialist, a personal trainer and then a gym membership just to assist you.?
No membership is required for the program, and clients can choose from packages with just a single session all the way through 10 sessions. Prices range from $29 per session to $49.
Stublensky emphasized that this program is unique and flexible. Participants can meet with their trainer either at the gym or in their home. Also, the personal trainer will customize the program with individual tools and food menus.
Also, Powerhouse Gym offers follow-up programs to help clients build upon their education and maintain their weight loss.
‘That’s what is different about this program – you have five avenues to lose through and everything is tailored to your needs,? said Stublensky. ‘This really is an education based system. We hope to educate you enough so you can work by yourself.?
