Local businessman is recognized in Washington DC for “Businessman of the Year.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee awarded Oxford’s life long resident, Wes Brooks of New Style Construction with the honors of 2003 Michigan Businessman of the Year.
Wes was presented his award in our Nations Capitol at a Washington DC convention center just a few blocks away from the White House, on March I 9th.
Wes Brooks is a fifth generation residential builder starting in his father’s construction company ( C.D. Brooks Construction ) in 1968 along side his brother Jim and grandfather ( C.D. Brooks Sr. ).
He started New Style Construction in 1991 after earning his own builder’s license.
Recognized in the Wall Street Journal this past Fall for helping promote a pro-business agenda as an Honorary State Chairman of the Michigan Business Advisory Council, Wes then received a National Leadership Award.
National Majority Leader, Congressman Tom Delay notified Wes Brooks by phone in February that he (Wes) had won national recognition for his role in operating a successful business and contributing with the State and National business agenda with a voice in the Michigan Business Advisory Council.
While in Washington, Wes Brooks was invited to take part in Congressional Tax Summit Meetings with Congressman, with such speakers as James Bickley from the National Government and Finance Division.
After the meetings, Wes joined many of the Congressman and speakers for dinner at Washington DC’s own downtown Olive’s Restaurant.
Wes had an opportunity to meet and speak with Mushtaq Khan of Pakistan who now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working as a consultant with the Environment and Energy International Corp.
Many hours were spent talking about the changes Mushtaq has gone through moving to this Country from his homeland and the differences as well as similarities of our cultures.
This was Brooks’ third time to Washington DC.
Twice as a child, Wes visited Washington DC with his parents Chauncey and Eileen Brooks, sisters Kathy ( Bentley ), Terri ( Moore ) and brother Jim Brooks. On this visit to the Nations Capitol, he was accompanied by a friend, Chantell Flores, daughter of long time Oxford police officer, Jim Flores.
The two visited near by Bethesday, Maryland and Chesapeake Bay, Virginia along with nearly every monument and Smithsonian in the city during their stay in Washington D.C.
Chantell has been active in volunteer work in politics in the Oakland and Lapeer Counties and currently attends Oakland Community College.
Wes is a 1977 Oxford High School graduate.
