Blackhawks wrestling

The Brandon Blackhawks wrestling team completed the 2012-13 season with a 27-6 record. The team lost in district competition to Holly High School by a score of 37-30. The Blackhawks finished tied for second place with Lapeer West High School in the Flint Metro League with an 8-1 record. In the Genesee County meet the Blackhawks finished seventh out of 23 schools who competed.
As a team the Blackhawks finished seventh of 43 teams in the Oakland County wrestling meet; finished first place in the Frankenmuth team invitational; finished fourth in the North Branch team invitational and seventh in the Michigan Super 16 dual meet. The Blackhawks finished first in the Brandon team invitational.
The Blackhawks grapplers had a combined team grade point average of 3.56. The team also recorded 10 Flint Metro League scholar athletes and 14 Brandon High School scholar athletes.
‘I’m anticipating a fourth consecutive year of academic all state honors,? said Coach Donors. ‘Also, a special thanks to assistant coaches Matt Sweetman and Luigi Reo. Along with team moms Lorie Biss and Sharon Bourdeau who prepared some outstanding team meals over the season.?
The Blackhawks grapplers included six regional qualifiers including Captains Nick Bis, Sr. 42-10; Trevor Bourdeau, Jr. 44-10; Max Wardel, Jr. 39-15 and Gordy Dwyer, Jr. 32-15. Wrestlers Thor Wardell, So. 41-13 and Max Sears, Jr. 23-17 also qualified for the regional competition.
BHS freshman Bryan LaVearn finished the season at 51-7, including sixth in the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Individual Division II finals at 103 pounds. In addition, LaVearn was Oakland County Champion, Flint Metro League Champion, finished fifth in the Genesee County meet, second in the district tournament and third in the regional tournament.
