A longtime local dentist is retiring.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Ron Lane, D.D.S., has practiced dentistry in Brandon Township.
‘I’ve loved serving my patients all these years,? said Lane, 56. ‘Some of my patients are third generations’I’ll miss seeing everyone. It’s been a great career and I have been very happy in my three decades of dentistry.?
A Flushing native, Lane graduated Flushing High School in 1976. He completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Flint and after graduation attended the University of Detroit School of Dentistry.
‘I actually wanted to be a pharmacist,? he said. ‘But I wanted to set my own hours and be my own boss rather than working every weekend. So I studied to be a dentist.?
In 1984 Lane moved to Ortonville and worked with Dr. George Jaruga, a longtime dentist then located at 830 Ortonville Road.
‘George was in a very small building across from St. Anne Church in Ortonville,? he said. ‘He was looking for another dentist to sell to. At the time there were three dentist chairs and only a part-time dental hygienist.?
The business grew and in 1992 Lane opened a larger office about a mile south at 1201 S. Ortonville Road.
‘Many aspects of my profession have changed over the years,? he said. ‘Perhaps the greatest improvement has been the digital X-rays. Not only is the amount of exposure to radiation now a fraction of what it was, but the quality of the pictures has improved, making detection easier.?
Also, dental hygiene has improved.
‘I’m seeing a lot better teeth than 30 years ago,? he added. ‘People are just more aware of diet and care at an early age. Children are learning to brush teeth very young now. Still, the biggest issue is pop, especially the sugary energy drinks. It’s by far the worst thing you can do to your teeth. Patients that sip on a drink all day keep sugar on their teeth.?
Ron and Diane Lane have three children, Christopher, Jessica and Jacob, all Brandon High School graduates. He will spend his retirement on the golf course and traveling.
‘One of my concerns when I decided to retire was who I would trust to take over my practice. I wanted to make sure my patients would be in good hands and have a dentist who shares my commitment to providing lasting care.?
Beginning Feb. 23, Ortonville native Dr. Angela (Wojtkowicz) Harrell will step into his practice. Harrell, a Brandon High School graduate, completed her studies at New York University College of Dentistry. Following residency, Dr. Harrell practiced dentistry in California, New York and the Grand Rapids area.
‘Dr. Harrell is a gifted dentist who will provide excellent dental care,? he said.
‘I will miss seeing all my patients, but it is nice knowing that you will be in good hands.?
