GHS Prom in Land of Make-Believe

Goodrich-More than 300 Goodrich High School students danced the night away at Saturday’s prom.
The theme of this year’s dance was ‘Land of Make-believe; Over the Rainbow? said class of 2007 sponsor Trisha McElrath.
‘We let the kids vote (on a theme),? said McElrath. ? This was one of the themes that we knew we could work with.?
Prom took place from 7-11:30 p.m. at Goodrich High School, 8029 Gale Road.
Upon their arrival at the high school, students names were announced as they walked a red carpet to the Raymond C. Green Center for Performing Arts.
Befitting the ‘Wizard of Oz? theme, the auditorium had been transformed into ‘munchkin land.?
From there, students followed a yellow brick road through several scenes’including Scarecrow land and the Cowardly Lion’s forest’before entering the gym, decorated to represent the Emerald city of Oz.
Once inside, students danced in the glow of green and white twinkle lights to music spun by a disc jockey as their images were projected onto a screen behind them.
McElrath said there were no behavioral problems with students at the dance.
After leaving the prom and changing into some casual clothes, students were invited to participate in a ‘mystery trip? for an additional $15.
Approximately 100 teens returned to the school, boarding buses to an undisclosed location, later revealed to be Roll Haven in Burton.
Once there, students played laser tag and roller skated before returning to the school to partake in a casino night.
Students were later served a breakfast catered by Cranberries Cafe, 10250 Hegel Road, before leaving at 6 a.m.
McElrath said part the reason for the ‘mystery trip? was to prevent teens from attending prom after-parties that may involve drinking.
It was planned to ‘keep them safe and let the evening continue,? said McElrath.
McElrath credits the evenings success to area parents.
‘Our parents that participated,? said McElrath, ‘were phenomenal.?
