The last Saturday in August is certain to bring warm temperatures and plenty of fun as one of the premiere summer events kicks off on Aug. 27 at Good Times in Goodrich.
Hundreds are expected to gather in downtown Goodrich to watch the parade, enjoy a band or two, and visit with the locals. The array of entertainment also includes an all-day craft show and marketplace vendors, robotics team demonstrations, motorcycle rally/show and walking tour of the cemetery.
The main attraction for the children is the bike rodeo sponsored by the Safe Kids of Greater Flint and Hurley Medical Center. Adults and children can take part in the Hometown Idol Contest. Contestants of all ages are sought to participate in America’s singing talent showcase, Hometown Idol, set to start at noon Aug. 27 at the Village Commons Park. Singers will compete in three age divisions: Juniors (12 and under), teens (13-19) and adults (age 20 and up). Music must be age-appropriate and family friendly. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the cost is $25 per contestant. The top three singers in each division will receive a cash prize, sponsor prize pack, a trophy and an invitation to perform in the Hometown Idol statewide finals to compete statewide.
New this year will be Sunday’s Picnic in the Park. For $8 a box lunch is available from Cranberries Cafe which includes Moo Cow Ice Cream. Dine at the Goodrich Commons and listen to music by Rock of Ages Big Band.
The bake-off is back again for another year.
‘All the profits gained from the bake-off will go to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan,? said Shirley Kautman-Jones, Atlas Township supervisor. ‘Over the past few years since we started the bake-off we’ve collected all the recipes and will have enough collected to publish a cookbook. Also, for $5 the public can sample and vote for the best pie.?
The Goodrich Garden Club will make Hollyhock dolls and will host a scarecrow contest.
The pie eating contest is back after a three-year absence.
‘At 1 p.m. the pie eating contest kicks off with a variety of prizes,? added Kautman-Jones. ‘It’s a lot of fun and plenty of pie goes flying all over the place.?
