Matthew Book
Petty Officer Master at Arms Matthew Book, 20, is currently serving in Bahrain, an island in the Persian Gulf.
Book is part of the Navy’s law enforcement. His duties include screening people who enter the base and travelling in convoys from the base to the harbor.
The 2006 Brandon High School graduate is the grandson of Carl and Linda Hayes of Ortonville. Book has been deployed to Bahrain since May 2007 and was due to return to the United States in May 2008 to receive a new assignment, but his tour has been extended indefinitely.
Linda Hayes says her grandson misses her cooking, his dog, Rocky, and hunting with his grandfather. This will be Book’s third Christmas away from home.
He recently received a care package from ‘Desert Angel? Louise Downs and cards and letters from area students and wants them to know how much he appreciates them.
