Reid Elementary media specialist retires

Goodrich- The Reid Elementary School Media Center will lose one important resource next month.
After 27 years with the district, Media Specialist Cheryl Matthews, 62, says she will retire from Reid Elementary in February.
Her retirement was announced at the Goodrich School Board meeting on Monday night.
‘I’m ready to move on,? said Matthews. ‘There’s something else out there for my husband Charles and me.?
Matthews started at Reid Elementary in 1976, working with the reading program. About 12 years ago she moved to the school library, which was then located in a small trailer near the building.
‘Students come back and remind me of their times out in the (library) trailer, they look at the new library and say, ‘it’s so big.? Still we had fun out there,? said Matthews. ‘We made do with what we had.?
While the school has grown over the years’Matthews said students have changed too.
‘Students are so familiar with technology today,? she said. ‘Kindergartners come into the library with the basic knowledge of computers. The encyclopedias are gone now’the changes are just overwhelming.?
Cheryl and husband Charles will spend more time at their cottage near Farwell, Mich. The couple have two children, David, a 1986 GHS graduate and Krista, a 1989 GHS alumna.
‘Goodrich is an amazing community,? she said. ‘The parents here are so involved and supportive with their children. This will always be home to me.?
