Team effort leads Brandon cagers to rout of Fenton

A quartet of double-digit scoring performances helped the Brandon varsity girls basketball team deal a severe blow to Fenton’s league title hopes.
The Blackhawks routed the host Tigers 59-27 in a Nov. 7 Flint Metro League game. With the win, the Blackhawks improved to 11-4 in the league, 1-1/2 games behind league-leading Swartz Creek (12-2).
Brandon Coach Bryan Ray said Nov. 9 he was impressed with how well the Blackhawks played against the Tigers.
‘Last night was probably our best game in the five years I’ve been here,? he said. ‘All 11 kids contributed to that.?
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter on their way to the victory, and led 31-11 at halftime.
Junior Sherri Lawrence led the Brandon scoring attack with 18 points, while Savannah Stedman contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and three assists. Sophomore Danielle Kwasiborski and junior Ashlyn Skornicka added 10 points each for the Blackhawks.
Ray said the three underclassmen (Lawrence, Kwasiborski and Skornicka) are ‘starting to assert themselves and learn how to compete at this level. Our guards did a terrific job of getting them the shots they made.?
Five days earlier, the Blackhawks defeated host Lapeer East 53-43 in their final home game of the season. Before the game, the Blackhawks honored their five seniors ? Stedman, Meg Donnay, Kate Haas, Maria Schmidtke and Lauren Ross ? who were playing in their final home game of their Brandon careers.
Stedman scored 17 points and Kwasiborski added eight points for the Blackhawks, who led the Eagles 25-22 at halftime.
After their scheduled Nov. 9 regular season finale against Clio, the Blackhawks will then prepare for the start of district action. The Blackhawks are slotted in District 9-A, hosted by Fenton.
The Blackhawks? first game of districts is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, when they take on the winner of the Fenton-Owosso predistrict game (scheduled for Monday, Nov. 13).
The other scheduled predistrict game Nov. 13 is Grand Blanc against Swartz Creek, with the winner scheduled to take on Holly at 5 p.m. Nov. 15. The district championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at Fenton.
Ray said the way the Blackhawks are playing right now, it doesn’t matter whether they take on Fenton or Owosso on Nov. 15.
‘I like our chances,? he said. ‘We’re peaking at the right time. We definitely have a shot at playing Friday night (in the district championship game).?
