Township budget discussionTuesday

Brandon Twp.- The township recreation department and Edna Burton Senior Center will likely face cuts ranging from 20-23 percent, while cuts from the supervisor’s, treasurer’s, and clerk’s offices will be anywhere from 12.5 to 15 percent under a plan discussed by boardmembers during a budget workshop Nov. 5.
‘We decided that we will take a percentage from each department,? said Supervisor Kathy Thurman. ‘We don’t have the exact percentages finalized, but it will be a higher percentage from the recreation department and senior center.?
A percentage reduction in each department was one of three options recommended by the budget committee last month. Other options included a workforce reduction in which positions could be eliminated, changed from full-time to part-time, and/or an early retirement option utilized and a reduction of the work week to either 32 or 36 hours.
Thurman said the percentage reduction in each department would save year-round large item collection in the township offered by Bedrock Express this year. Also being discussed is a reduction of chloride applications to three in the next year, as opposed to the current five, and spending money on road repairs to take advantage of Tri-Party funding before the program is eliminated.
No final decisions have been made. The next budget workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m., Nov. 17, at the township offices, 395 Mill St.
