Girl Scouts from across the Lake Orion area gathered at Lake Orion United Methodist Church on Sunday for the fourth annual cook-off event.?
‘I wanted to get the girls excited about cooking and learn the science of cooking,? said coordinator Sharon Kelly. ‘Many girls and families don’t have the time to put in the kitchen anymore, so I wanted to see what the girls could do without help.?
The big challenge, she said, was food preparation; everything had to be made from scratch — not just home made.?
‘The girls prepare such wonderful recipes,? she said, noting 37 young cooks turned out this year. There hasn’t been a bad food yet.?
One of the judges, Dave Schonfeld of Oxford, said he was recruited to taste-test by a friend involvolved with planning the event — a frined who knows how much he likes to eat.
Schonfeld was in charge of judging desserts, and siad it wasn’t an easy task.
‘We came down to a couple of things that were really, really good,? he said. ‘In the end we were splitting hairs, and ended up awarding first place to the girl who had the least amount of (adult) help in the kitchen.?
Once he tasted all those desserts, Schonfeld headed across the room for some dinner.
Other judges included Jan Riley, Kelly Simakas, Linda Treadway, MaryLynn White, and Kathy McMinn.
