Goodrich — On Monday night, the Goodrich Board of Education approved a $300,000 bid from Chesterfield Township-based KJP Roofing and Sheet Metal for the replacement of the high school auditorium roof.
The bid replaces the Michigan-based Quality Roofing approved project on Nov. 25, 2024 at a cost of $236,715. At that time the bid was one of two lowest received with a total of 12 submitted. However, neither company included the full scope of the bid and they rejected the project after approval.
As a result, the third lowest bid recommendation was approved by the board on Monday night.
The additional cost to replace the failing roof, which had been in place since 2001 was about $64,000 said Jason Davis, senior project manager AUCH Construction commented at Monday’s meeting. .
“The roof project will take about 10 days or less with perfect weather,” said Davis. “Unfortunately we are now at the mercy of Mother Nature with temperatures and moisture. They would only tear off what they could replace in a day.”
During an earlier meeting District Superintendent Mike Baszler said that during heavy rains this past summer the auditorium roof leaked.
“We knew it was bad but, unsure just how bad it leaked,” Baszler said. “There was damage to the sound baffles near the ceiling of the auditorium. Following the leaks, a temporary patch was completed.”
The funds for the replacement were set aside from the 2020 school bond.
“The key is we are very fortunate to have District Business Manager Cristal Rousseau along with our construction management team continue to be very good stewards of school funds,” said Baszler. “I’m impressed with how well taxpayer money was allocated for this repair project.”
