A 13-year-old Oxford girl was struck by a vehicle and injured shortly before 7 p.m. Friday as she attempted to cross S. Washington St. (M-24) between Oxford 7 Cinema and Starbucks Coffee.
According to the Oxford Village Police report, the incident occurred at the intersection of Dennison/Stanton and M-24 when the 13-year-old girl and two other girls began crossing S. Washington St. from the theater in a westward direction toward Starbucks.
According to a witness, the trio got halfway to the southbound lanes, when two of them turned back.
However, the 13-year-old girl continued on and was struck by a southbound 2003 Chevy driven by a 38-year-old Oxford woman.
“She (the victim) flew up into the air about 10 feet and landed,” according to one witness statement taken by police.
According to Fire Chief Jack LeRoy, the force of the impact “caved in” the vehicle’s windshield, broke the driver’s side headlight, and literally “knocked” the victim “out of her shoes.”
The driver who struck the victim told police the “girl bolted out into oncoming traffic.”
“Traffic was very heavy and I didn’t see her,” the driver stated in the police report.
The injured victim was transported by ambulance to the POH Medical Center in Pontiac.
On Monday, Village Police Chief Mike Neymanowski told this reporter he spoke with the victim and “she’s doing fine.” He reported her to be in “good spirits.”
No citation was issued to the driver, according to the police report.
Neymanowski said said there was no fault on the driver’s part.
