Ortonville-It is once again time for the Village of Ortonville to come together for the annual luminary project.
Luminaries are no more than a special bag with some sand in the bottom and a small candle that will burn for eight hours. The village streets are lined with these bags and the candles are all lit by 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
A production line puts the sand and the castles in the bags during the morning of Christmas Eve at the Department of Public Works. Council members and volunteers gather to put the luminaries together, load them on trailers and set them out on the streets. Around 5:30 p.m., friends and neighbors come out and light these luminaries.
Volunteers are the keys to make this work. There are families that make lighting of the luminaries part of their holiday tradition, and have been doing so since its inception. There is always room for other community members or groups to help light the candles or clean up after. Details: Ortonville Village Offices, (248) 627-4976.
