Linens N? Things wants to sell specialty wine at its Baldwin location

Soon the ‘things? at Linens N? Things could include wine.
The Orion Township board of trustees received a notice from the Liquor Control Commission (LCC) regarding a request from LNT West, Inc. (Linens N? Things) for a new SDM (Specially Designated Merchant) license for the store at 4852 S. Baldwin Road.
An application was submitted and the $1,000 application processing fee paid. The board asked to have the clerk forward its concerns over the license to the LCC, asked for a right to final inspection, and postponed any board action on the license request until the Feb. 7 meeting.
‘A lot of people are probably wondering why Linens N? Things is going into the wine business,? said supervisor Jerry Dywasuk.
Linens N? Things attorney Kelly Allen said many department stores, such as Target, can qualify to sell beer and wine.
‘It’s something like you’d see at Cost Plus,? she added. ‘It will be mostly specialty wines, and they are expanding the special food selection.?
Allen said six other Linens N? Things had also applied for the SDM license.
‘There hasn’t been one granted in Michigan yet,? she said. ‘You guys were the first ones to get us on an agenda.?
Gingell said the ultimate decision wasn’t up to the township, but rather the LCC.
‘They approve the request,? he said. ‘The local municipalities have no authority other than to voice concerns.?
‘Generally, people in our community aren’t excited about more places selling wine and liquor,? said Dywasuk. ‘We don’t want to look like we’re in favor of this.?
