Spikers enjoy winning season, tied for 2nd place in FML

The Oxford Varsity Girls Volleyball team has made their mark this season with an overall record of 22-9-2, and 4-2 in the Flint Metro League.
At Jan. 29 tournament the team ended the first half of the season by winning the first place title at the North Branch Invitational.
After losing to North Branch at both the Imlay City and the Goodrich tournaments, Head Coach Kristi McDevitt said this past weekend win was bittersweet.
‘Beating them at their own tournament (was bitter), but (it) gives my girls confidence in their abilities as a team, which has been shaky at times this season,? McDevitt said.
So far the team has played five tournaments in the first half of the season, advancing out of the pool play in each tournament, giving them a tournament record of 18-7-2.
As it stands right now, the Wildcats are tied with Lapeer West for second place in the Flint Metro League behind Lapeer East, who remains undefeated.
‘Lapeer East and West are the two teams that beat us in the league so far,? said McDevitt. ‘West was a disappointing loss for us because we (had) just beat them for the Flint Central championship,? she said.
Junior Captain and Outside Hitter Shana Jones has the most kills in league play this season with a total of 56. She averages nine kills per game.
Junior Middle Blocker Mykala Salquist has notched 54 kills in league play, averaging nine kills and six blocks per game.
Sophomore Outside Hitter Danielle Wicker is second on the team in kills with 55, and tops in defense and passing.
As the only setter on the team, Sophomore Liz Hazelwood is gaining court time at the varsity level, averaging 23 kill assists per game.
Senior Captain Vanessa Collier brings hitting, serving, passing and digging consistency to the team improving her game more than 100 percent from last year, McDevitt said.
Seniors defensive specialists Darci Kujawa and Amanda Crump are both passing above 60 percent and averaging eight digs per game in league matches.
‘I’m very impressed with our record so far,? said McDevitt. ‘It’s been a super fun season and each girl on the team is a perfect fit.
The Ladycats take on Lapeer West at home 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3.
