Varsity wrestlers come close in team district, Webber qualifies as an individual for regional

Gerry Webber won the 152-pound class for Lake Orion’s varsity wrestling team at the individual district on Feb. 19, after the team lost to Holly, 39-18, in the championship match of the Division I team district, held at Lake Orion High School on Feb. 16.
At the team district competition, Lake Orion defeated Grand Blanc, 53-16 in the semi-finals, as Holly took out Clarkston, 31-27.
Against Grand Blanc, winning for Lake Orion were: Brendan Tobin at 103 with a pin in 54 seconds, Billy Bissett at 135 with a 8-0 win, Ian Rocheleau at 140 with a pin in 1:36, Chance Hadden at 145 with a pin in 3:12, and Evan Chowinski at 152 by void.
Also winning for the Dragons: Gerry Webber at 160 with a 10-3 win, Ben Knight at 171 with a pin in 5:41, Scott Avery at 189 with a pin in 1:24, Shane Tobin at 215 with a 14-5 win, and Darren Peshl at 275 with a pin in 53 seconds.
In the finals against Holly, winning Dragon wrestlers were: Jake Varilek at 125 with a 6-2 win, Hadden at 145 with a 9-8 win, Chowinski at 152 by void, Webber at 160 with a 4-0 win, and Peshl at 275 with a 6-0 win.
Holly will advance to the regional as Lake Orion’s record went to 32-6.
In the individual district, Webber won the 152-match, defeating Cody Bearden of Anchor Bay, 4-2 in overtime.
Lake Orion also had a consolation qualifier in Varilek, who at 125 defeated Eric Nowicki of L’Anse Creuse North, 2-0.
The MHSAA team regionals are Feb. 23 at Davison, while the individual regionals will be held at Bay City Western on Saturday.
The MHSAA team finals are set for March 4-5 at Battle Creek, while the individual finals will be March 10-12 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
