Marilyn Gaskins, President of the Clarence Elbert Stanton Memorial Scholarship Foundation, advises eligible residents of the Lake Orion and Oxford School Districts that applications for monetary awards from the Stanton Foundation can now be obtained at the counseling offices at their high schools.
Applications are for candidates applying for first year awards and for previous recipients requesting first year renewal. A limited number of applications have been placed in the public libraries of Orion and Oxford.
Electronic versions of the application may be found at http://www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us/lohs/assets/stantonscholarship-initial.pdf for the initial application or http://www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us/lohs/assets/stantonscholarship-renewal.pdf for the renewal application.
The Stanton Foundation was funded through the generosity of the late Lovett (Bill) Stanton. He established the foundation to honor and perpetuate the memory of his deceased father, an early banker and resident of Oxford.
To be eligible for an award, individuals must be a resident of Lake Orion or Oxford School Districts; be between the age of 16-25; have a minimum of a 3.2 high school grade point average (GPA) or a 2.8 college or post-secondary GPA; and be committed to completing their chosen program. Deadline for returning applications is April 4.
Since the first scholarships were awarded in 1990, $1,070,000 has been invested in the students of the two school districts. Gaskin estimates another $120,000 will be awarded this year.
Officers, trustees and advisory council members of the foundation volunteer their time and talents to evaluate the applications to determine the dollar amounts to be awarded to the successful candidates.
Other officers of the foundation besides Gaskins are; Paul Bailey – vice president, Bert Quinn ? secretary/treasurer, and trustees Jim Bushman? Joan Kozachik, LeRoy Mabery, and Sarah Tripp Emino.
Serving on the Advisory Council are Tim Davidson, Greg Gossick DDS., Janette Jones, Karen Logan, Pauline Morden, Roger Oberg, William Reiss and Lew Wilson.
Monies to fund the scholarships come from the sale of Oxford Bank stock. This year the foundation will be liquidating approximately 1,000 shares. Any individuals interested in purchasing bank stock shares are asked to call Bert M. Quinn at 248.726.5950 after March 15, 2005.
