Sheri Kaplan, Social Worker for the Lake Orion School District, and Ben Gerdeman, Coordinator for the GAP (Guided Activities Program), teamed together on March 12 to host their third annual Lake Orion Fundraiser Volleyball Tournament.
The tournament was held at Lake Orion High School in the Fieldhouse, and was supported by 138 players from the greater Detroit area, which included four teams of Lake Orion Schools staff.
The tournament raised over $6,300 for the two programs, and an additional $4,000 in donations and prizes for the players.
Jet’s Pizza in Lake Orion was one of the big sponsors for the day, providing 12 giant party trays of pizza.
Each team received a ‘goodie bag,? including a t-shirt for each player and assorted snacks. The tournament entry fee also included breakfast and lunch.
The top three teams from each division received a trophy and prizes ranging from $25-50 per player. All other teams received consolation prizes that were donated from local businesses, including restaurant gift certificates and movie passes.
The abundance of donations allowed 100 percent of the entry fees ($6,300) to be donated to the Special Education programs and the GAP program.
Special Education and GAP will team up again in 2006 to coordinate their fourth annual Benefit Volleyball Tournament.
It is not too early to begin finding players and to help the fundraising effort. For more information and a registration form, please contact Sheri Kaplan at 693-5420, ext. 6456.
