The Rotary Club of Oxford yesterday presented a $240 check to the Northeast Oakland Advisory Committee (NOAC) to help the local charity cover its operating expenses.
NOAC is part of the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency based in Pontiac. On the second Wednesday of each month at the Community Education Resource Center (CERC) in Lake Orion, NOAC volunteers pass out food to low-income mothers and children, expecting mothers, disabled individuals and low-income senior citizens.
However, due to the fact the group’s volunteer base is comprised mostly of seniors and disabled people, it utilizes trustys from the Oakland County Jail to lift and carry its regular food deliveries from Focus Hope.
The only requirement is they must buy the trustys lunch, something which NOAC can no longer afford to do.
‘Our funds have run out,? said NOAC Treasurer Ann Schmidt. ‘We’re down to almost zero in the bank. And we’re looking for funding to try to keep us going.?
‘If we don’t feed (the trustys), we lose them,? said NOAC Chairperson Barbara Hart.
That’s where Rotary’s donation comes in. Schmidt said the Rotarians? $240 will be used to buy lunch for the approximately 25 trustys and NOAC volunteers.
