The Battle of the Books 2005 took place in March and was an enormous success.
Twenty seven teams of fifth graders went above and beyond their regular homework to read 20 books over a four month period.
Battlers fought hard the day of the event in the meeting room of Orion Township Library. The room was filled with participants dressed in team T-shirts, matching hats, even huge foam fingers and fuzzy slippers.
Librarians asked their 48 toughest questions, but not even the four-point ‘stumper? question could stop the eager readers.
In the end, the Super Squirts (Madison Barry, Reilly Kissinger, Lauren Owings, Madison Romney and Amanda Schimpke) triumphed with 85 points.
In a very close second place came the Smarties (Tyler Eschendal, Adam Harvey, Erica Spitzley, Adam Storts and Kyle Wood) with 82 points.
The Silver Fish (Cassie Hock, Julie Jacobs, Layne Murphy, Emily Peterson and Kelsey Peterson) placed third with 80 points.
All Battle of the Books teams were awarded prizes at an awards ceremony and enjoyed hearing Sue Stauffacher, author of one of the favorite battle books, Donuthead.
