The Varsity Ladycats swept opponent Carmen-Ainsworth last Monday in non-league action and improved their record to 6-5 overall. In the first game, Oxford’s AnnMarie Skylis went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Pitcher Amber Cervantez threw all seven innings and had one walk and five strikeouts from the mound. At the plate, Cervantez went 2 for 4, had 2 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored. Junior Mary Bono was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. Junior Jamie Badia was 1 for 4 and had 2 RBI’s. Oxford held Carmen-Ainsworth scoreless and won the game 11-0. In the nightcap, Cervantez was on the mound again and went the distance for her team. She had no walks and 5 strikeouts in the second game. Freshman Kelsey Oliver and Junior Mary Bono stood out offensively for the Ladycats, both going 2 for 3 and scoring one run each. Head coach Sue Roeher credited the win to Cervantez’s solid pitching.
On Thursday, the Ladycats traveled to Flint Kearsley for their second non-league match-up of last week. In the first game, the two teams went head to head, holding one another scoreless for 6 innings before Oxford scored 3 runs at the top of the seventh. Home team Kearsley fought back and scored 4 runs in their last at bat, defeating Oxford 4-3. Senior Captain Jessica Anhel, Juniors Jamie Badia and Lindsay Nieman, Sophomore Amanda Jolly, and Freshman Kelsey Oliver each had a hit in the first game.
In game two, Oxford couldn’t rebound from the heart-breaking loss in game one and was defeated 10-0. Offensively, Sophomore AnnMarie Skylis, Senior Amanda Crump, and Junior Mary Bono each had a hit. ‘With 13 games under our belt, we look forward FML play,? Roeher said. The Ladycats are 6-7 overall.
