Millage passes, incumbents return

Voters going to precincts on May 3 had no problem restoring an operating school millage that expired in 2004. The millage passed 2,896 to 1,037.
The Lake Orion School District will now be able to continue to levy 18 mills ($18 on each $1,000 of Taxable Valuation) on non-homestead and non-qualified agricultural property. It will last until 2015.
Homestead property owners (primary residence in Orion Township) will not see any increase in their taxes because of the renewal.
Steve Lawless was unsuccessful in his attempt to unseat incumbent Jim Weidman from the school board. Weidman garnered yes 2,000 votes to Lawless? 1,271.
Weidman’s term is for four years.
Bill Walters had no competition for a partial term that will end June 30, 2006. He was appointed to fill a vacant seat last fall. Voters gave Walters 3,049 votes.
