Memorial Day weekend can be a fun time ? an extra day off, barbecues, picnics, boating, trips up north. It’s the official start of summer.
But let’s not forget the real meaning behind the holiday ? to honor all the brave soldiers throughout U.S. history who died in battle, giving up all of their tomorrows for our liberty and security today.
Memorial Day ceremonies will take place in Addison on Saturday, May 28 and in Oxford Monday, May 30. Addison’s Saturday ceremony will begin at noon and take place in the Lakeville Cemetery on East Drahner Road.
Oxford’s Monday ceremony will begin in Centennial Park at 10 a.m. with guest speaker Bill Patterson and ceremonies honoring Oxford’s fallen heroes. A parade down S. Washington and W. Burdick streets will immediately follow.
The parade will conclude at the Oxford Township Cemetery (on the south side of Burdick) with a wreath-laying, 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
