Goodrich softball ends standout season with district loss

A stellar season for the Goodrich varsity softball team ended on a down note.
The Martians could not quite overtake Flint Kearsley in their opening district game May 31 at Kearsley, losing a 5-4 contest. Goodrich ended their season with a 37-3 record.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, but Kearsley scored two more in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Martians added one run in the bottom of the inning to trim the Kearsley lead to 4-3.
Kearsley added one more run in the top of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 5-3. Goodrich scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-4, but Kearsley held off the Martians the rest of the way.
Senior Jessica Morgan (26-2), in her final game for Goodrich, took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out six and walking one.
Alisha Bergeron went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored, while Kortni Elsworth went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
As they did in their other three tournaments this season, the Martians came out on the winning end of the Goodrich Tournament Saturday, May 28, defeating Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, Hartland, and Richmond.
Goodrich also won the Hudson, Midland, and Petoskey tournaments.
In their first game of the tournament, the Martians defeated Our Lady of the Lakes 12-0. Goodrich scored in all five innings of the contest, headlined by a five-run fourth inning.
Tori Morgan was the winning pitcher for Goodrich, striking out four while walking two and allowing three hits.
Kelsey Krych went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, while Sydney Mahalak went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jenni Brothers went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored, and Tara Garman went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The Martians? good fortunes continued with a 7-0 victory against Hartland in the second game of the tournament.
Jessica Morgan struck out nine batters in picking up the win for the Martians, allowing five hits and three walks.
Brothers went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Garman went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Krych went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four stolen bases; Jessica Morgan went 2-for-2; and Elsworth went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Goodrich capped off the tournament with a 2-0 win against Richmond. Jessica Morgan was again the winning pitcher for the Martians, striking out three batters while allowing five hits and a walk. Julie Owen went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Martians.
The Martians swept a May 24 doubleheader against Clarkston, winning the opener 7-0 and the nightcap 9-4.
