Construction worker injured by falling beam

A 24-year-old Dearborn Heights man was injured after a steel beam fell on top of him at a construction site on Silverbell Road.
The accident happened on Sept. 6. According to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Department report, co-workers said the man had been helping to erect and set 45-foot steel columns.
A co-worker said he and the injured man had attached a pin through a hole in the column, and gave the crane operator the signal to raise the column into place.
When the column was 20 feet in the air, the pin came out, and the column started to fall.
The Dearborn Heights man was standing under the column, waiting to set it in place. The co-worker said he tried to warn him, but the column struck the man on the head.
Co-workers called 911, and OCSD deputies on the scene observed that the man was bleeding from the ears and nose, and his upper left arm appeared to be nearly severed.
He was breathing but unconscious when he was transported via ambulance to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital for treatment.
