Goodrich cagers clinch eighth straight GAC title with defeat of Mt. Morris

The tradition is still alive for the Goodrich varsity girls basketball program.
The visiting Martians routed Mt. Morris 78-8 in an Oct. 25 Genesee Area Conference Red Division game, clinching at least a share of the division championship.
This title is the eighth straight league crown for the Martians, including four straight GAC Red titles. Goodrich won four straight GAC titles before the league divided into Red and Blue divisions.
Kortni Elsworth scored 20 points for the Martians, who established their dominance early with an 18-3 run in the first quarter.
This year’s Martians went into the season losing four starters from last year’s team, including the top two scorers, Maribeth Barns (graduation) and Nykole Pfaff (transfer to Flint Powers).
Goodrich coach Jason Gray said this year’s Martians displayed a strong resolve in light of losing so many players.
‘I’m really proud of this group, because not once did they make excuses,? he said. ‘They looked at it more as a challenge. They definitely earned it (the league championship) and are a worthy part of the tradition.?
With five games left in the regular season (including a scheduled Oct. 27 game at home against LakeVille), Gray said the Martians will work on refining their skills for the forthcoming district tournament.
‘It’s a matter of getting things on the same page and getting back to fundamentals,? he said.
